Books for Pastors and Counselors

It is inevitable that you will have opportunities to help women suffering in abusive relationships. You can help, if you know what to do. You can do much harm if you act without wisdom.

Guidelines for Pastors from the Center for the Prevention of Sexual and Domestic Abuse, can help you help abuse victims and abusers in your congregation. They use the word "battered." Please remember that verbal abuse is a symbolic form of physical violence. Verbal abuse is violent, it just isn't physical. Verbal abuse batters at a deeper than physical level.

Domestic Violence: What Every Pastor Needs to Know, by Reverend Al Miles

Rev. Miles has a bad attitude. He can't stand it when pastors refuse to help abused women, and he can't stand it when pastors stand in the way of healing for these women.

His attitude shows in his writing. Women who live with abuse will feel affirmed and cared for. Pastors who have ignored or abetted abuse may feel challenged, and probably offended by his book.

Rev. Miles debunks the myths pastors may believe about abuse. He gives examples of many ways NOT to handle domestic abuse. And he expounds a solid biblical basis for effective intervention in abusive relationships.

Every pastor does need to know what Rev. Miles has learned through years of working with abused women.
