Domestic Violence and the Church,
Ministry and Clergy
Members of the Clergy can best help by
lending the victims support,
encouragement and other resources that may be needed
or available
but recogizing that there are dynamics involved that
only a specially
trained therapist can deal with.
Any abuse victim seeking counseling, especially family
counseling involving the abuser should immediately and
confidentially be referred to a local Domestic Violence
shelter to find a therapist.
Most abusers are suffering from mental or behavioral
anomolies and even victims have their own issues are
are beyond what most clergy are equipped to deal with
other than offering a listening ear and providing support.
Please do not feel obligated to offer advise aside from
a confidential referral.
Do assess other needs such as transportation to and
from visits to a therapist.
