Survivor Stories

Every survivor’s journey is different—and every voice matters. In this section, you’ll find real stories shared by people who have reached out for help, found safety, and began rebuilding their lives. Their courage is a powerful reminder that healing is possible, and no one has to face abuse alone. We share these stories (with permission and names changed when needed) to offer hope, foster connection, and reassure others that a path forward exists.

Chantielle’s Journey

My son's father was extremely physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive, I had a protective order, and I had moved, but it wasn’t working. A family friend had told my mom about the Dove Project. I called Angie and told her it wasn't just me, it was my son, who I believe was six at the time, my dog, and my cat. Coming to the Dove Project, it wasn’t something that we were expecting. We didn't know what to expect but our first night there, it felt safe, it felt like home. They helped me contact legal advocates, counseling for my son and I, get my son registered into school, helped with housing and so much more. My son today, he’s 12 years old, will still say, “I actually had fun there.” It was home, it was our little home for a little bit, and it was a place for us to get a new start.

It’s been six years, and the help didn’t just stop after I moved out of the Dove Project. They helped me get a house. It finally took six years this year in February where the judge granted all of the things for me to protect my son, and they were there for me at that court date.

When you’re in the moment of deciding to leave, I know it is extremely scary. The Dove Project was able to help me with and guide me to resources that I didn't even know I needed, or that I could get resources for. It was very comforting to have someone as an advocate that was knowledgeable about these types of situations to help my son, and I move forward in life in a safe way.

It’s been a calling of mine to give back and pay it forward. I want to let other people know that they can start over. It’s not easy but you can do it, and you have people behind you that can help you every step of the way.

A Dove Project Hero’s Story

“I was a victim of Domestic Abuse at the hands of my ex-husband and had to escape with my five children.  I was terrified and didn’t know where to go. The Department of Family and Protective Services helped us find the Dove Project. Once there, I knew I was safe.  The Dove Project helped me gather paperwork, find legal help, secure a new job, and find a new home.  Escaping domestic abuse is terrifying.  The Dove project is here to help you get it done.”
